A heartfelt journey about the gift of life
by Ben Graetz
Gift of Life is a heartfelt and informative story of an Indigenous woman who is struggling with end stage kidney disease, that follows her journey through the difficult process of dialysis to receiving a kidney transplant. It is a story about family, loss and love and the extraordinary gift of giving through organ and tissue donation.
Written largely but not exclusively for Australian Indigenous audiences, the play tackles head-on the issues surrounding organ donation and takes the viewer on a heartfelt journey of both sadness and joy.
Developed from an original idea by Jason De Santis, written by Ben Graetz and managed by Artback NT, the project is supported by Donate Life and the Australian Government Organ and Tissue Authority.
This short film, put together by MiseEn Media, includes interviews with the 2012 cast including playwright Ben Graetz, director Alex Galeazzi, audiences and Associate Professor Dianne Stephens of Donate Life. It follows the production from the Darwin Entertainment Centre to Nguiu on Bathurst Island, giving a small insight into the work and dedication that drove the project, which was remounted for an NT tour in 2013. In 2014, the show travelled to Alice Springs and Western Australia and 2015 sees Gift of Life tour to Nhulunbuy and Yirrkala.
